Competitive Edge Research & Communication is dedicated to serving the nation’s opinion research needs, specializing in understanding public opinion. We conduct surveys, focus groups, dial-testing, analysis, political polling, civic studies, and campaign services. Since 1987, CERC has worked with clients who value a professional resource that provides them with accurate research and communication to help them make winning decisions.

John Nienstedt
President & CEO

Early in his career, John Nienstedt worked in local political campaigns, was an aide to a San Diego County Supervisor and managed a 300-person political phone center in Texas. He and a partner founded Competitive Edge Research & Communication, Inc. in 1987. John acquired sole ownership of the firm in 1991, computerized the operation in 1992, expanded it in 1995 and again in 1998. CERC opened its El Paso survey research center in 2017.

John earned his master’s degree in political science from SDSU with an emphasis in social science research. His thesis was titled “A Practical Strategy for Predicting Voter Turnout in Pre-Election Polling.” John is CERC’s principal analyst and moderates its focus groups.

John is a featured speaker at campaign seminars and is frequently called on by the media and other organizations to shed light on political and polling issues. He has written articles for the U-T San Diego and Campaigns & Elections magazine. John is a member of the Insights Association and the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR), presenting papers at three AAPOR conferences. John received the SBA’s Entrepreneurial Success Award for 2000. He is Mexican on his mother’s side, a native San Diegan and an avid baseball player and fan.

John’s specialties include questionnaire design and script writing, project development, data analysis, focus group moderation and analysis, sampling and dial-testing using Perception Analyzer.

Rachel Lawler
Research Director

Rachel began her career in survey research in 2010 as CERC’s Research Assistant and has now returned as Research Director. During her years away from CERC, she held research roles with Hall & Partners, Kantar, and the Public Policy Institute of California. She also served on former California Congressman Elton Gallegly’s staff in his Washington, D.C. office. Rachel is a dualist researcher, having experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Her specialties include questionnaire design, data preparation and analysis, and report writing.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Chapman University and a master’s degree in political science from the University College Dublin, Ireland. She is an active member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and has presented research findings at past AAPOR conferences. Rachel was born and raised in San Diego and currently resides in Mooresville, North Carolina with her husband, Mark, and their Siamese cat, Ghillie. She is a competitive Irish dancer and enjoys true crime podcasts, horror movies, and taking trips to Japan and Walt Disney World as often as possible.

Ronald Zavala
Director of Operations

Ronald Zavala began his call center career as an interviewer in San Diego at Directions in Research in 1996. Since then he has acquired a wealth of interviewing, supervisorial and management skills, having worked for Trotta Associates (qualitative research) in Orange County, SK&A (medical database) in Irvine, Field Research (qualitative research) in San Diego, and Flagship Research (qualitative, quantitative and field research) in San Diego. He served as CERC’s Call Center Manager from 2007 to 2017 in San Diego and assumed the position of Director of Operations in El Paso in 2018.

Ronald received his BA in Classics from San Diego State University in 1993 with an emphasis in Greek and Latin. He was honored as the Outstanding Graduate in his class, Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Ronald also earned a Teaching Credential in the same subject from SDSU in 1994. He was raised in Central America, is fluent in Spanish, and served honorably for two enlistments in the U.S. Navy as a Quartermaster (navigator’s assistant). His interests include Mexican history, music and art, live Bob Dylan bootleg recordings, Jamaican music, Biblical Hebrew, craft brews, swimming and exploring the southwestern region of our great nation.

Ronald’s specialties include Employee management, CATI programming and sample management, Project direction, Client liaison, Project scheduling, and Database development and administration.

David Ferree
Call Center Manager

David has worked in survey research since 1996 when he managed a call center in Reading, Pennsylvania and was responsible for all personnel management, project management and facility management. During his career he has served as a Director of Site Development, a Director of Training and Development, and a Director of Field Services. He has expertise in research planning and design, questionnaire development, interface with analysts and subject matter experts, project scheduling, training of management/supervisory staff and ensuring on time deliverables. David is a Spanish speaker, developing interviewing capabilities and administrative structure for bilingual research as well as advising on cultural aspects of research design and implementation and questionnaire design.

Libbie Nienstedt
Account Manager

Libbie earned her BA in Liberal Arts at Cal State Fullerton in 1990. She has worked for Competitive Edge since 2014 and is responsible for billing, accounts receivable and payroll. Previously she served as an event planner for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.

James Iwu
Research Assistant

As CERC’s Research Assistant, James Iwu prepares reports, charts and presentations. He is also an audio/visual specialist for CERC’s focus & dial groups and manages in-person data collection in the field.

James is a native San Diegan who studied CPU Science at Zavier University in New Orleans. He originally worked for CERC as a CPU and Cable Tech from 2001-02. James then worked as an Interviewer and during 2004 he was promoted to Quality Assurance Coach. In August 2012 he became the Assistant Call Center Manager and then in 2014 became the first Research Assistant promoted from inside the company.

James is well-read and usually has interesting factual trivia to share with everyone on a wide variety of subjects. His hobbies are researching conspiracy theories, video games and winning at Texas Hold’em.
